about

Phil Rawsthorne, ( 1956- ___ )
"I became interested in pen and ink illustration while studying the works of medeival woodcut artist Albrecht Durer and 60s underground comic artists Rick Griffin and R. Crumb while growing up in San Diego, California in the early 1970s.  The art movements of the early 20th century, notably Dadaism, Expressionism, Cubism, and Surrealism are a major influence on my style.  Favorite artists of that period include europeans Klee and Miro.  I also pay homage to 60s artist Peter Max, (along with the mini-movement of "OP Art"), and The Master Leonardo Da Vinci for his legendary and seminal linework.

While some subject matter is evident in my drawings, linework alone is employed to suggest subject matter where the viewer can see shapes, etc... of things that they feel they recognize.  "

Phil now basks in nearly nonstop liquid sunshine on the hazy banks of the murky and meandering Willamette River in the unhurried burg of Oregon City, Oregon.
